BrewDog Brewery Latest to Get Vegan Certification

Scottish craft brewery BrewDog has successfully registered 23 beers with The Vegan Society and will now bear a vegan symbol making it easier for customers to identify cruelty-free brews. Beer often includes isinglass—a type of gelatin found in fish bladders—during its filtration process, a practice that The Vegan Society CEO Jasmijn de Boo says is unnecessary, archaic, and “being phased out of this industry thanks in part to breweries like BrewDog, who recognize the size of the vegan market.” While BrewDog has never used animal-derived ingredients, the company found it necessary to seek certification from The Vegan Society in order to remain competitive. BrewDog’s Head of Marketing Sarah Warman explained that the company’s desire to bear the vegan symbol on its beer “is part of our bid to make craft beer brewed with passion available as easily possible,” and exclaimed, “Here’s to the craft beer revolution, and vegan punks everywhere!” Similarly, in 2015 Irish beer company Guinness announced its plan to remove isinglass from its filtration process.
