Today, plant-based company Impossible Foods announced its partnership with OSI Group, a McDonald’s meat supplier for more than 60 years. The two companies will work together to increase the production capacity of the Impossible Burger, which will result in supporting the nationwide rollout of Burger King’s Impossible Whopper—which the chain launched to 59 locations in St. Louis, MO earlier this year. “We got ourselves into a supply-demand imbalance in which we frankly just did not anticipate the level of demand that came from consumers,” Sheetal Shah, Impossible Foods senior vice president of product and operations, said. Shah says that a McDonald’s partnership could be possible in the future, stating, “I see no reason why we shouldn’t be able to go anywhere and everywhere.” Also this week, Impossible Foods received a “generally recognized as safe” (GRAS) letter from the United States Food and Drug Administration for its key ingredient soy leghemoglobin (“heme”), removing a significant barrier for the debut of Impossible Burger on retail shelves.
