San Diego-based vegan eatery Plant Power Fast Food (PPFF) recently raised more than $100,000 from 163 investors through the equity branch of crowdfunding platform Indiegogo. The new platform was created through a partnership between Indiegogo and equity crowdfunding website MicroVentures and enables businesses to receive capital funding in exchange for equity. PPFF posted a profile on the new platform to attract investors to share equity in its second location (slated to open this May) after the successful launch of its flagship drive-thru vegan eatery in the Ocean Beach neighborhood in January 2016. In its investment profile, PPFF identified a growing opportunity within the fast food industry, citing market research studies that revealed 70 percent of consumers are seeking plant-based fast food options—an industry that is projected to grow to $645 billion by 2020. Last week, Indiegogo shared PPFF’s campaign on Twitter and urged followers to “invest in the future of #fastfood.” PPFF serves vegan re-makes of traditional fast food dishes including sandwiches, fries, shakes, tacos, and the “Big Zac”—a version of McDonald’s Big Mac made without animal products.
