An employee of Bloomfield, CT-based butcher shop Saba Live Poultry was recently arrested on animal-cruelty charges. Badr Musaed slit the throat of a young cow in the parking lot of home improvement store Home Depot after the animal escaped from the butcher shop and ran towards the neighboring business. After escaping, the cow was chased by three Saba employees and a police officer who was driving by. When the cow was captured, Musaed slit the animal’s throat in the parking lot. He was cited for public disturbance immediately following the incident. “There are certain rules and regulations anyone has to follow about how you put down the animal, whether it’s euthanization or a slaughter,” Bloomfield Police Lieutenant Christina Benvenuto said. “It was a few things: It was how the animal was killed, where the animal was killed, sanitation. All things like that is cruel to the animal.” A subsequent inspection of the butcher shop by the state’s Department of Agriculture discovered that several thousand animals appeared to be in heat stress, along with being in crowded and unsanitary conditions. The shop was closed until it complied with regulations regarding cleanliness and animal treatment. Musaed was released from jail on a $10,000 bond and is expected to appear in court on August 23.
