While the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are planning a mostly meat- and dairy-free menu for the astronauts expected to travel to Mars in 2030, the space program is also putting together a greenhouse plan for the team to grow their own food. Since the trip to the Red Planet will take roughly six months to complete, NASA will implement a plant-based farming system in order for the astronauts to eat nutritious food to stay healthy for the entire journey. The Vegetable Production System will produce fast-growing plants such as leafy greens, radishes, and bok choy, and will be watered and tended by crewmembers.
