The campaign to reinstate horse slaughter in the US continues with President Obama approving inspection permits for equine plants in Iowa and New Mexico, but resistance against the inhumane practice has also strengthened as Hollywood actor and philanthropist Robert Redford and former New Mexico governor Bill Richardson join the protest. The two recently started a coalition that has taken legal advancements to join The Humane Society of the United States, Front Range Equine Rescue, and other animal-welfare groups in a lawsuit that will prevent the plants from running. According to the HSUS president and CEO Wayne Pacelle, New Mexico Attorney General Gary King is also trying to prevent horse slaughter from being reinstated due to public safety concerns.
