Actor Ryan Gosling wore a knee-length vegan leather coat in the new film Blade Runner 2049. Costume designer Renée April chose to go with a shearling-style coat made from painted cotton instead of animal skins and fibers. April was applauded by animal-rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)—which sent the costume designer vegan sheep-shaped chocolates in appreciation—for her decision to use animal-free materials. “In every one of PETA’s many investigations into the wool industry, we’ve found that sheep are routinely punched, kicked, stomped on, and badly cut up for their wool,” PETA Senior Vice President Lisa Lange said in a “thank ewe” note to April. “You’ve so beautifully shown that cruelty-free materials are the way of the future—starting in the present!—and people will flock to wear them.” While the film has received mixed reviews, the actor’s wardrobe has been at the center of conversation in terms of cruelty-free fashion. Memes of the star wearing the faux shearling coat have been widely circulating on social media since the movie’s release, further promoting cruelty-free fashion to the masses.
