Beauty retailer Sephora will stop selling false eyelashes made from mink fur, both in stores and online, after pressure from animal-rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The animal-rights group created a campaign to show the horrid conditions that mink endure in the fur industry, prompting 280,000 customers to email Sephora about mink fur eyelashes. Going forward, Sephora will not replenish its stock of mink fur eyelashes and only sell synthetic versions.
“There’s no difference between a mink coat and mink eyelashes when it comes to animal suffering,” PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman said. “PETA is celebrating Sephora’s decision to join Tarte, Too Faced, Urban Decay, and the scores of other brands that know that there’s nothing beautiful about stealing an animal’s fur.”
In the Netherlands–which farmed approximately 4.5 million mink in 2018—the mink fur industry might soon come to an end after COVID-19 outbreaks were found on 17 farms, passed from the animals to humans, leading the Dutch Parliament to vote to shut down the country’s remaining 128 mink fur farms.
