The Huffington Post Examines Hypocrisy of Dog Slaughtering

In a recent Op-Ed published on The Huffington Post, Compassion Over Killing Executive Director Erica Meier examines the biased Western outrage over the Chinese Yulin Dog festival. The Yulin festival slaughters 10,000 dogs every year for human consumption, which routinely sparks outcries from citizens outside of China who criticize the event as barbaric and cruel. Meier points out that while dogs endure horrendous suffering by being packed into tight cages, having their throats slit, and being boiled alive as part of the annual festival, intelligent animals such as cows, pigs, and chickens endure far worse in larger numbers every hour in the Western world. “While we may be horrified by the consumption of dogs in China, the way in which those … dogs are treated isn’t far off from our own treatment of other animals raised and killed for food in the US,” Meier writes. After providing several examples of how animals are mistreated outside of the Yulin festival, Meier ends with the statement, “Cruelty to animals is wrong, regardless of species or geography.”
