This week, CR Vasco da Gama (CRVG)—one of Brazil’s top football (soccer) teams—partnered with social impact startup VeganNation to promote sustainability initiatives within the sports industry. In recent months, VeganNation has gathered sports partners across Brazil—including soccer teams Remo, Paysandu, Iranduba, and Nacional Club, which are located near the Amazon rainforest, and legendary soccer player Cafu—to help it bring awareness and solutions to the waste generated by the global sporting industry. “Brazil leads the world in football and now we are embracing a leadership role in saving our precious rainforests, and transitioning towards a sustainable reality,” CRVG President Alexandre Campello said. “Our partnership with VeganNation is our first and perhaps most important step in taking personal and institutional responsibility to making our games plastic-free and sustainable.” In collaboration with its partners, VeganNation will promote sustainability policies such as incentivizing recycling at games, placing recycle bins at select matches, and distributing educational material regarding sustainable living to fans across the world. “Football fields have often been used as a yardstick for destruction, such as saying that three footballs fields of the Amazon are destroyed every minute,” VeganNation CEO and founder Isaac Thomas said. “Now, we are flipping the script, using football fields to actually ignite change, inspire millions of individuals and empower each of us to take action to save rainforests and indeed, the planet.” VeganNation is working to create the world’s first vegan ecosystem and last year used VeganCoin (a cryptocurrency it introduced in 2018) to purchase a 10-year lease to preserve 15,000 acres of the Amazon. VeganNation is working on similar initiatives with sports teams in Europe and Asia.
