Ice cream brand Van Leeuwen recently added a new California-inspired vegan flavor to its Los Angeles locations. In celebration of the opening of its fifth greater LA area shop—now open at The Point mall in El Segundo—the brand developed the Hemp Cookie & Avocado vegan flavor which is made with oat milk avocado ice cream, a touch of lime, and packed with chunks of housemade hemp seed chocolate chip cookies.
Founded as a truck in Brooklyn in 2008, the brand now operates 22 scoop shops in New York City and Los Angeles. In 2013, Van Leeuwen’s added its first coconut-based vegan ice cream in two flavors (chocolate and vanilla). It has since innovated its offerings to include an entire vegan lineup with flavors such as Salted Caramel, Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough, and Toasted Coconut Blondie, with special flavors previously offered in honor of various holidays such as Earth Month and Popeye’s 90th Birthday.
On July 8, Van Leeuwen’s is further expanding its vegan offerings with two flavors: cashew-based Gianduja Pie (a vegan remake of the company’s classic recipe made with Italian hazelnuts, Republica del Cacao, chunks of gluten-free shortbread, and fudge swirl); and Caramelized Banana Praline (a new version of one of the brand’s first ever vegan flavors featuring caramelized bananas blended with oat milk swirled with brown sugar toffee and housemade candied pecan praline pieces). These flavors—part of Van Leeuwen’s new monthly specials—will be available until July 31 at its NYC and LA scoop shops, as well as for nationwide delivery on its website.
