Vegan brand Silk is donating $75,000 to the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) Legal Defense and Education Fund to support its efforts in dismantling systemic racism. “Black Lives Matter. The killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery are painful reminders of the long-standing racial injustice and discrimination in our country,” the company stated on Instagram. “Silk stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and all those working toward justice. It’s long past time for change. Now is not the time for silence. We’ve been listening, learning, and reflecting on what we can do better now and in the long-term to make progress toward a more inclusive world. We are dedicated to being active participants in driving the critical changes needed for racial equality in our society.”

Black Lives Matter. The killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery are painful reminders of the long-standing racial injustice and discrimination in our country. Silk stands with the Black Lives Matter movement and all those working toward justice. It’s long past time for change. Now is not the time for silence. We are dedicated to being active participants in driving the critical changes needed for racial equality in our society. Silk will be donating $75,000 to the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund, but money cannot erase the discrimination Black communities have faced for centuries. This is only the first step in our ongoing commitment to support systemic change. We welcome your ideas and feedback on how we can better show up and drive real change. We see you. We hear you. We stand with you. #NAACPLDF #EnoughisEnough

The brand admitted that a financial contribution to NAACP is not the only step it intends to take to fight for the end of systemic racism. “[The donation] is only the first step in our ongoing commitment to support systemic change,” the brand said. “We welcome your ideas and feedback on how we can better show up and drive real change.”

In the days after the death of George Flyod—who was killed by police officers in Minneapolis on May 25—a number of companies have made contributions to support the Black Lives Matter movement, including vegan fast-food chain Plant Power Fast Food, vegan cheese brand Miyoko’s Kitchen, vegan bacon brand Outstanding Foods, and, most recently, vegetarian food brand and restaurant Amy’s Kitchen.
