On February 4, South Africa-based chicken chain Nando’s will launch “The Great Pretender” vegan chicken burger across its locations in Queensland, Australia, with a greater rollout to all 270 Australian locations anticipated later this year. Today, Nando’s is giving away 500 free orders of the new option with a side of PERi PERi fries at one Brisbane location to promote the greater launch. While the pea protein and wheat-based patty is vegan, Nando’s warns customers that it prepares The Great Pretender on the same surface as meat. “We’re excited to be innovating our menu and providing an option for Nando’s fans which still includes all the perks of our famous PERi-PERi flavor,” Nando’s Head of Food Mario Manabe said. “Our aim is to make dining at Nando’s as inclusive as possible, so this addition will certainly help in catering to Australia’s ever-changing eating habits.” In the UK, international chicken chain KFC first tested its Quorn-based vegan “Imposter Burger” at select locations in June and expanded the vegan chicken option to its 900 UK locations in December. Stateside, KFC is working with vegan brand Beyond Meat and, will add vegan Beyond Fried Chicken—which sold out in less than five hours at a KFC test location in Atlanta this summer—to 70 additional locations in Nashville, TN and Charlotte, NC (and surrounding areas) in February for a limited time.
