Habit Burger to Add Plant-Based Impossible Burger This Year

Later this year, California-based fast-food chain Habit Burger plans to test a plant-based burger at its more than 280 locations nationwide. The limited-time menu item will feature a plant-based patty from Impossible Foods. Earlier this month, the chain was acquired by fast-food corporation Yum! Brands, which also operates KFC, Taco Bell, and Pizza Hut. Habit Burger’s new offering would be the third Yum! Brands subsidiary to add a plant-based option to its menu. Last August, KFC introduced plant-based Beyond Fried Chicken made from vegan brand Beyond Meat at one test restaurant in Atlanta, GA—which sold out in five hours—before expanding the offering to more than 70 locations in Charlotte, NC, Nashville, TN, and surrounding areas this month. Last fall, Pizza Hut tested a vegan Italian sausage pizza topping at one location in Phoenix, AZ. Made from MorningStar Farms’ new Incogmeato line, the vegan sausage was featured exclusively on a limited-time Garden Specialty Pizza. Although Yum! Brands subsidiary Taco Bell has yet to add vegan meat options such as those made by Beyond Meat or Impossible Foods to its menu in the United States, it has been testing items such as oat-based vegan meat in select European locations. American locations currently offer a customizable menu with 26 certified-vegan options.
