Gourmet food and wine magazine Saveur has named Berlin the new vegetarian capital of the world. The city known for its schnitzels and wursts makes its surprising appearance atop the list thanks to a booming, vegetable-forward trend embraced wholeheartedly by local epicurean chefs, offering vegan dishes such as creamy lime-almond gazpacho with avocado, and beets braised in a balsamic-agave bath fried in a crisp vegan tempura-like batter and served with raspberry sauce. “Berlin is the first major Western city where vegetarianism has achieved complete culinary parity with the traditional carnivore’s diet,” Alexander Lobrano, a famed omnivorous food writer, wrote. “Berlin has changed a lot, and its bold vegetarian delectation has changed me, too.”
