Global fast-food chain Subway recently launched a vegan Signature Loaded Wrap in the United Kingdom. The new Vegan Wrap with Garlic Aioli—which is advertised alongside two meat-based versions—features a vegan patty, guacamole, lettuce, onions, peppers, tomatoes, and vegan garlic aioli. The vegan patty and garlic aioli are new vegan versions of vegetarian items that Subway offers. The patty, which previously included eggs and calcium caseinate (derived from eggs), is now made with mushrooms, water chestnuts, carrots, peppers, black olives, and textured vegetable protein. For the aioli, Subway previously only offered a vegetarian version made with milk powder—an ingredient that has been removed. The chain has added plant-based menu items at other locations around the world in recent months. In February, 200 Subway restaurants across the Netherlands added a Vegan Supreme made with a seasoned chickpea burger patty. Last year, restaurants in Australia and New Zealand debuted an all-vegan sandwich featuring smashed falafel topped with a variety of vegetables, and restaurants in Finland launched a Vegan Delite featuring soy-based spicy vegan steak, red onion, red and green peppers, carrots, spinach, corn, white pepper, peas, green chili, and garlic.
