California-based food company Don Lee Farms recently debuted vegan chicken nuggets and breaded vegan chicken patties. The two new products were created to replace similar kid-friendly, animal-based foods in school cafeterias from California to New York. “Putting aside the environmental and health benefits, which are incredible, these products are just as delicious as their meat-based equivalents,” Don Lee Farms head of development Danny Goodman said. “The idea that we are winning over kids who regularly eat and love traditional chicken nuggets with our new plant-based chickenless items is really a breakthrough.” Goodman said the company sees a future when plant-based nuggets replace the need for schools to source animal-based nuggets. The company predicts that the price of plant-based foods are projected to drop as more districts choose vegan proteins over meat proteins for environmental, health, and cost reasons. The new items will launch in time for the 2019 school year and will be available for schools to purchase starting this summer. Earlier this year, Don Lee Farms announced that its popular vegan burger patties—which first debuted in Costco stores nationwide in February 2018 and sold 1 million units within 60 days—will be available in 15 countries, including within Europe, South America, and the Caribbean later this year.
