Today, new all-vegan gelato shop M!LK opened in Toronto inside a shared space with vegan pizzeria Pizzeria Du. The shop—which is scooping gelato to customers on the sidewalk from the restaurant’s front window—currently offers 16 rotating flavors  made with a base of coconut, oat, or rice milk that include classic chocolate and vanilla along with unique options such as chai masala, hibiscus, ginger turmeric, dulce de leche, Oreo, and piña colada.

Created by Roger Yang, the owner of Pizzeria Du and Avelo, the shop was named M!LK to get people thinking about various plant-based milk options other than dairy milk from cows.

“When we launched Pizzeria Du, we were considering options for desserts. At our other restaurant, Avelo, we had been making some really interesting ice creams, like black garlic, or hazelnut and olive oil, and we decided to expand on this,” Yang told VegNews. “Gelato is a great way to showcase vegan food because it’s bold and flavorful. It’s the Italian version of ice cream, which has less air churned in, and less fat, typically served a little warmer, which makes the flavor really stand out.”

M!LK will be serving the gelato from their open window whenever weather permits. During the colder months, and when indoor dining returns, the gelato will be available inside alongside Pizzeria Du’s menu. Yang also plans to expand the gelato brand to other restaurants and retail stores.
