California’s Democratic Party voted unanimously this week to support the California Cruelty Free Cosmetics Act (SB 1249), which, if passed, would make it illegal to sell cosmetics tested on animals in the state after January 1, 2020. The bill was introduced by Senator Cathleen Galgiani, sponsored by Social Compassion in Legislation (SCIL) and the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM), and passed through the state Senate in May with a 21 to 9 vote. “Californians have long fought personal care products that are tested using human-relevant methods and not on animals,” Kristie Sullivan, Vice President of Research Policy at PCRM, said. “It’s wonderful to see the Democratic Party back SB 1249, a bill that benefits the public, animals, and California businesses.” The bill will be presented for voting to the state Assembly after it returns from its summer recess.
