Malaysian startup Phuture Foods will debut its first product, plant-based pork, in Hong Kong this year, according to TechCrunch. The company was part of accelerator program Brinc this year and developed halal-friendly pork from wheat, shiitake mushrooms, and mung beans to appeal to Asian consumers. Phuture Foods—which is also working to develop vegan chicken and lamb—aims to sell its vegan pork products at a cheaper price than their animal-based counterparts. The company is also considering kosher certification and will expand its distribution to Singapore and Malaysia after its Hong Kong launch. Last year, vegan brand Right Treat launched its first vegan pork product Omnipork in Hong Kong with a similar mission and will expand its distribution to China and Thailand by the end of the year.
