This week, Minneapolis-based vegan shop The Herbivorous Butcher prepared a vegan meat and cheese platter for legendary hip-hop group Wu-Tang Clan. The group members are visiting Minneapolis during this week’s extreme sports competition X Games and requested the platter to be delivered prior to their performance at the games today. The Herbivorous Butcher—founded in 2016 by brother-and-sister team Kale and Aubry Walch as the first vegan butcher shop in the United States—prepared a platter filled with deli ham, summer sausage, pepperoni, herbed feta, Brie, and American cheese with crackers, nuts, and fruit for the iconic group. Approximately 80 percent of the Wu-Tang Clan is vegan, according to member Jason Hunter (professionally known as “Inspectah Deck”) and many of the musicians use their fame to promote compassionate living. Last year, members Robert Fitzgerald Diggs (“RZA”), Dennis Coles (“Ghostface Killah”), and Gary E. Grice (“GZA”) promoted the launch of the plant-based Impossible Slider at White Castle through a multi-pronged campaign. Most recently, longtime vegan activist Diggs penned a letter to New York City legislators in support of a citywide fur ban. “I started listening to Wu-Tang Clan when I was 16 years old,” Aubry Walch told VegNews. “I remember taking one of their lyrics, ‘Wu-Tang ain’t nothin to f*ck with,’ but inserting my name instead. And now here we are.” The vegan butcher shop has previously prepared meals for actress Portia de Rossi, comedian John Stewart, presidential candidate Cory Booker, and many others.
