The day prior to Cinco de Mayo isn’t just an ordinary day. It’s Star Wars Day. Around the world, fans of the franchise and Jedi hopefuls will be greeting each other with, “May the Fourth be with you” in honor of this coincidental spin-off of May 4. Many look forward to celebrating the holiday at Star Wars: Galaxy Edge within the Disney theme parks, raising spiked glasses of blue and green milk while munching on vegan-friendly Outpost popcorn from Kat Saka’s Kettle.

The origin of Star Wars Day

“May the Fourth be with you” is the official greeting fans worldwide use to celebrate Star Wars Day. This turn of phrase is inspired by the famous words spoken throughout the film franchise: “May the force be with you.”

According to Lucasfilm, “May the Fourth be with you” was first used in 1978 as a greeting amongst American Star Wars fans celebrating Independence Day on July 4.

The phrase gained further momentum the following year, when Margaret Thatcher officially became the first woman elected to serve as the United Kingdom’s Prime Minister. After successfully winning election on none other than, you guessed it, May 4, her political party commissioned an ad in The London Evening News. It read, “May the Fourth Be With You, Maggie. Congratulations!” While there is no direct correlation between the film and the political ad, the ad helped the phrase gained momentum.

Decades later, it gained further popularity among fans of the film and May 4 unofficially became Star Wars Day. In 2019, California lawmakers voted to make it an official holiday. The initiative was motivated by the opening of Disneyland’s Star Wars: Galaxy Edge later that year.
